Cake decorating fondant

Cake decorating fondant - Here are the step by step instructions on covering your cake with fondant correctly:

  • Measure the diameter and height of your cake. Brush the cake with a little apricot glaze or royal icing(if you are decorating a dummy, brush it with royal icing instead).
  • Roll the fondant to 1/8 inch thick and the diameter should equal the diameter of the cake plus 2 times of the height of the cake.
  • Gently and loosely roll the fondant onto a rolling pin and quickly unroll it onto your cake making sure the fondant covers the sides of the cake adequately. Press lightly with your palm all over the cake, and cut off the excess fondant on the sides of the cake.
  • Using a fondant smoother, smoothen the icing all over the cake to smoothen any visible creases. If you notice cracks on your fondant, take a little icing sugar and rub it gently with your palm on the creases. The heat from your palm will melt the sugar and cover the creases, making it smooth and shiny.
