Cakes are chocolate mud. I hand painted the images around the cake and added detail with royal icing. Figurines are white chocolate. Cake was for a 17 year old so had to make sure it wasn't too young looking... Cake was covered in a layer of chocolate butter cream and then fondant.

Severed Arm - Zombie - Walking Dead

by Rebecca Ford
(Statesville, NC)

11x15 sheet laying as the base. Kelly green buttercream icing for the grass. Took another 11x15 red velvet sheet cake, halved it, filled it with buttercream, layered and froze it. This section was used to carve out arm. After carving the arm, light coating of buttercream and wrapped in fondant. Used rolled dried fondant with twizzlers (marrow) as the bones, shredded twizzlers for the veins, molded rice krispies for fingers, and exact knife to carve the name. Use a wooden stick and toothpicks as tools to shape the nails and other hand details. Light wash of copper for skin tone, and deep red for other detailing. Did use a few supports under the arm to keep from sinking as it was heavy.

Tangled Cake

My daughter wanted "Tangled" cake for her birthday. I couldn't find a cake pan anywhere and was told they didn't make one. SO, I bought the Wilton Disney Ariel cake pan and modified the colors to look like Rapunzel from "Tangled". She loved it!

Ghostbusters Cake

by Lisa Palladino
(New York, United States)

I used lots of cake. 4 layers for the bottom layer and 4 layers for the top. My son is allergic to wheat so I used gluten-free cake mix, by Betty Crocker, is bery good by the way. I have to be creative with incorporate his cake within the rest and this worked out well.

I put the cake on a wood board, and my husband drilled 6 long screws into the bottom so I could stabilize the rice cereal treat buildings.

I made slimer, marshmallow man, and the buildings out of rice crispie treats and covered them with fondant. I also used a long sucker stick to put slimer in the top of the cake. I found that Duff's fondant is also easy to use, its soft and rolls very nice.

Then I used cookie cutters for the ghosts. I attached to the buildings with royal icing. It dries super hard.

I used letter cookie cutters for the words. Also to make the fondant shine I sprayed olive oil cooking spray and brushed it on the fondant with a paint brush. It really finished the cake off.

My son turned 5 and was so excited for this cake.

Power Puff Girls Cake

by Kristy
(Lawton OK USA)

Buttercup

Buttercup

This was one of the first cakes I tried to decorate.

I made these cakes for my twin's birthday when they liked the PowerPuff Girls. I used boxed Yellow Cake for the faces which I baked in round cake pans. I used cupcakes for Bubble's pigtails and I used cupcakes for Buttercups long hair. I colored cream cheese frosting to create the colors that I wanted. I piped the eyes and other things on with a cut sandwich baggie.

Hello! The cake that I baked for a lovely 2 year old girl is a pineapple yellow cake with chocolate ganache and pineapple filling and is frosted with chocolate ganache. I covered it with marshamallow fondant that I made at home and it was yummy! The figurines were also made at home and they took a lot of time and effort to make. Everything on the cake was edible except the wiggly eyes on the stars. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Tweety Bird Gift Box Cake

by Monica
(Lansdale, PA)

I designed this cake for a surprise adult birthday, for a person who happens to love tweety bird. I only had 1-1/2 days to do it. The bottom tier is a 12 inch square two layered cake, I decided to put the top of the box(which is foam core covered in fondant) on an angle so it would look like it was opened and tweety was the gift inside. The customers got the concept and loved the cake.

Tweety was made from RKT(rice krispie treats) covered with melted white chocolate and put in the fridge to harden. I choose RKT because i had no time for fondant to dry. Once dried i smooth the chocolate with the warmth of my hand to get a smooth appearance and then covered it with fondant.

Good luck & happy caking

Monica

Ariel

by Holly Cherry
(Lehigh Acres, FL)

The cake tiers are 10", 8", and 6". The shells, including the one Ariel stands in, are made of white chocolate and tinted with gel food colors. The treasure chest is also made from chocolate. The bottom tier was iced in stripes of blue and purple, then "combed" with an icing tool. The second layer is iced to resemble scales to fit the aquatic theme. Sixlets candies are used for the "bubbles" on the top tier.

Hannah Montana Electric Guitar Cake

by Melissa Andrade
(San Antonio, Texas,USA.)

Hannah Montana Electric Guitar Cake

Hannah Montana Electric Guitar Cake

I made this cake for my daughter's 11th birthday. She is a huge fan of Hannah Montana. When I asked her what kind of cake she wanted for her birthday party, she said she wanted a life size electric guitar. My first response was "There is no way I can do that! She continued to tell me how awesome my decorating skills were and that she knew I could do it. Needless to say I borrowed an electric guitar and I tackled the task and she was bouncing off the walls at her party. All of the guests were amazed at the cake that took up the entire table. It totally boosted my self esteem and I am no longer questioning my ability to do big and outrageous cakes. I have since then done an Optimus Prime, a Monopoly board, and cakes I would have never tried if it wasn't for my little cheerleader pushing me out of my comfort zone!

I used MMF and food coloring. Instead of kneading the color black into the fondant (which turns MMF purple) I painted the fondant instead which gave a glossy look to the books. Red Velvet is the cake. To me it's the only cake to compliment the overall theme of Twilight. For more info please visit my site at www.sweetavenuela.com.

Ben 10 and Alien Cupcakes

(United Kingdom)

Ben 10 and Alien Cupcakes

Ben 10 and Alien Cupcakes

Ben 10 and Alien Cupcakes
Ben 10 and Alien Cupcakes

This cake was my first ever attempt at cake making. My son is a big Ben 10 fan and looking at the prices of shop bought cakes i decided i could do just as good a job for half the price...

I decided to make a cake in the figure of Ben 10, this was a 20 inch figure which consisted of chocolate sponge cake with a chocolate buttercream filling. After shaping the cake into my Ben 10 figure I covered the cake in fondant icing or frosting which was colored in the appropriate colors e.g green for the pants, white for the T-shirt etc, I then finished the final touches with a paint brush and licorice flavoring.

As the cake was taken to my son's school I decided to make 30 cupcakes or fairy cakes so each of his school friends could enjoy it too. On top of the cupcakes, I added a face of an alien made from fondant icing which was colored in either red or yellow and finished with black licorice coloring. The alien heads were four arms and heat blast as these are my son's 2 favorite alien characters from Ben 10.

The best thing about this cake making experience was the look on my son's face and all his class mates when the cake was brought out to him by his teacher...

I am one very happy and proud DAD !

Cinderella Cake

by Angie Mizon
(United Kingdom)

Cinderella Cake

Cinderella Cake

Cinderella Cake
Cinderella Cake
Cinderella Cake

This is the second one I have completed in the last two months and this is how I tackled it. I made it as a maderia cake in two 2 ltr pyrex bowls then cut out an opening 2 inches wide x 1 inch deep then cut a further centimeter down and took it to a point. This i covered with the same colour sugarpaste as the base, and on the other cake, I placed a strip of the base coloured sugarpaste 2 inches wide to make the floor, to sit Cinderella on, and then sandwitched them together with jam and butter icing, this is how I proceeded. I stuck the cake to the already sugarpasted board, covered it in fondant and marked the lines of the pumpkin on the icing with a veining tool.

Having made two Cinderella carriage cakes in two months, the most difficult thing I found to accomplish was the four chassis. I decided, after 4 of them breaking when I glued them on the carriage with icing, that it was better to make these at least a week before I needed to, that way they were fully dried and glued on without much difficulty and they didn't break (I used sugar flower paste to make them as I had so much difficulty trying to get them to dry in time) The mice I made out of sugar paste 250gms, and tylose powder half a teaspoon, kneading them together so that I could use it as modelling paste immediately, this worked very well. The wheels, spokes, leaves, roots, and lanterns, were all made from sugar flower paste. All pieces were stuck with royal icing , although edible glue was recommended. That's how I made it.
